Introduction

A Centre of Excellence that has served the bilingual Religious Education community across Wales since 1979 has just announced a new collaborative venture.  From 1 August 2008, the Welsh National Centre for Religious Education at Bangor University will be directed by Bangor University in collaboration with Trinity College, Carmarthen, a Church College of the University of Wales .

This new collaboration will bring together the expertise of two prestigious Higher Education institutions in Wales and will provide a wealth of experience and subject expertise to support the professional RE community across the whole of Wales.

This new venture combines a long tradition of excellence in bilingual Initial Teacher Education and in the Professional Development of RE teachers, in the provision of bilingual RE / RS degree and higher degree programmes and in bilingual research of international reputation in the field of Theology and Religious Studies.

The Centre has enjoyed nearing 30 years of support of the Local Authorities and other bodies who have made annual contributions to the resource available to teachers including the publication costs of ‘RE News’. The Centre looks forward to continued support and a close working relationship which will ensure that the Centre and its supporters continue to meet the needs of the RE community across Wales.

Mr Vaughan Salisbury, who will shortly take over the Chair of the Welsh Association of SACREs said:  “I am delighted that Bangor and Trinity are combining their excellence in this field and are strengthening their collaboration.  I look forward to working together alongside the RE community across Wales.”

Professor Janet Pritchard, Head of the University's College of Education and Lifelong Learning, where the Centre is based,  added that “bringing together two prestigious Higher Education Institutions, who have a strong bilingual reputation and renowned excellence, one in the North and one in the South, will result in a vibrant and effective resource for Religious Education throughout the whole of Wales.
